Photograph taken by @christianziegler This is one of thousands of leaf-cutter ants, who work together very busily cutting and carrying leaf fragments. Each ant carries a little piece of leaf towards the underground nest, where is it chewed into smaller fragments by other ants. They do not eat the leaves, but they farm a fungus on it. They feed the fruit bodies of the fungus to their offspring. This is a brilliant strategy because the fungus is immune to the toxins present in many tropical plants. This genus of ants is about 50 million years old – you could easily call them the earliest farmers on earth.
