There is a place in the world where Syrian #refugees are hearing a foreign word: welcome. @damonwinter traveled to #Toronto to photograph some of the Canadians who are banding together to personally resettle — essentially adopt — refugee families. Jim and Peggy Karas, pictured here with Julia Ahmed, teamed up with a group of retirees to help bring the baby into the world safely in April. The group helped Julia's mother, Wissam, pick out tiny outfits and baby gear. Peggy stayed with Wissam during labor. And when Wissam needed an emergency c-section, the sponsors asked permission to offer their prayers. Once Julia was home, though, she went from being the Ahmed family member the sponsors worried about most to the one they fretted about least.
