Men watched for artillery fire along a front line overlooking an important ISIS-held area in Libya. In the company of a willing commander, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter @declanjwalsh and @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer Tyler Hicks, who took this photo, traveled down a highway strewn with the charred remains of vehicles that were destroyed in suicide bombings. Their #nytassignment: to document life on the frontline of the fight with ISIS in Libya. An assault on the town of Surt, the Islamic State’s Mediterranean stronghold on the Libyan coast, has put ISIS under crushing pressure in Libya, where the group has its largest base outside Iraq and Syria. The attack force has pushed the Islamists into the city center, where they are pummeled with bombs and gunfire and cut off from their main escape route by sea. The siege coincides with the recent eviction of ISIS from the Iraqi city of Falluja, and combined they are a heavy blow to the group’s territorial ambitions —— even as ISIS retaliates with devastating attacks against civilians.
