One of the most important jobs during a honey hunt is to keep a fire smoldering at the base of the cliff. Maule Dhan, pictured here, won’t approach a hive until the air around it is filled with smoke. The honey hunters like to start the process first thing in the morning because the air hasn’t warmed up enough to create the crosswinds which tend to funnel down the Hongu Valley each afternoon. ~
I had assumed the purpose of the smoke was to subdue the bees, and it wasn’t until the end of our trip that Asdhan Kulung, Maule’s assistant, told me the real reason they do it. “The smoke is for the queen bee,” said Asdhan. “We want the queen to fly away before we start the harvest so she can start a new hive somewhere else. We go to great lengths to preserve the hive.” ~
