Greeks settled on Sicily from the 8th century BC bringing with them artistic and religious traditions, as well as skilled artisans.
Faced with a population explosion, economic problems and political tension in the Greek homelands between 750 and 600 BC, many Greeks left to establish new colonies. Initially, small expeditions were led by aristocrats seeking new land, power and wealth.  They established communities in what is modern day western Turkey, the Black Sea region, North Africa and the western Mediterranean, including Sicily. The Greeks initially favoured eastern, coastal areas, but gradually expanded along the southern and northern coasts, leading to conflict between Greeks, Phoenicians and local populations.

Success in battle as well as trade provided tyrants and civic communities with the wealth for major building projects. Some of the Greek temples on Sicily built in the Doric style were amongst the largest and most impressive anywhere in the ancient world. This photo shows the Greek temple of Concordia, built around 440–430 BC in Agrigento, Sicily.

Discover 4,000 years of history on this remarkable island in our #SicilyExhibition, until 14 August 2016.
