We had tried to do something stupid, climb an unknown mountain covered with fresh snow by moonlight. Slogging up through thigh deep snow @BurchamPhoto and I took turns breaking trail. We’d just cleared tree line, me in the lead, when the entire snow field settled with a distinctive “whoomph.” Even as a flatlander I knew that was a bad sound, the sign of unstable snow. No avalanche probes, no shovel, no one who knew where we were. A quick conference and we beat a hasty retreat, properly chastised by the mountains. Then crossing the valley we were handed the most wonderful gift. A brief but beautiful Aurora display that we would have completely missed had we still been on the mountain…
