Usman wears numerous clothes pins as a sign of loosing a card game called song, a popular pass time on the island of Sungsang off the east coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, in the Banka Straits.

The third story I did for @ナショナルジオグラフィック was on the Malacca Straits. I spent two days on Sungsang, a lovely and welcoming island off the coast of Sumatra situated along the western edge of the infamous strait. There I met Mr. Usman, significantly loosing in a card game called Song — the more points one looses, the more clothing pins one clips to their face. In this match, Usman was clearly showing the predicament he was in.
