Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Inside Fort Douaumont, the largest of the French forts surrounding Verdun, one finds the infrastructure of a self-contained war machine. This photograph represents part of the elaborate machinery, still in place from a century-ago, and used to raise, lower and rotate one of the several large canons inside the fort. Despite its elaborate defenses, including a moat with cross fire guns, a single courageous German soldier was able to penetrate its defenses and sneak inside the fort. Inside he found only a small number of French soldiers operating this gargantuan place. This was because by a little over a year into WWI, French Generals decided that Fort Douaumont was made obsolete by a new, high tech German cannon that was capable of piercing the thick concrete fortifications of the fort. France’s adversary doomed this grand place before a single shot from the new weapon was fired.
