Last Friday the Jose Antonio Lasheras director of the famous Spanish cave art site Altamira, died in a car accident in northern Spain.
Jose Antonio was a gifted archeologist and wonderful director of Altamira. He was always eager to explain the treasure it was his charge to protect. It was with his guidance that a team of scientists (partially funded by National Geographic) found new dates for the art in Altamira. Alister Pike and Dirk Hoffman found some of the Altamira paintings were over 28,000 years old. More than twice the age the paintings were originally thought to be.
As a director, Jose Antonio’s dedication for preserving and reinterpreting Altamira will be impossible to replace. For those of us who had the privilege to be inside Altamira with him and feel his passion for the place, we have lost much more than a colleague.
