We’re @SILibraries, taking over the Smithsonian’s account this week, with colorful gems to share from our stacks! The Libraries’ trade literature collection includes over 500,000 pieces representing over 36,000 companies, including catalogs, pamphlets, folios and other samples from American businesses (basically the “junk mail” of the 19th-early 20th centuries). It is an important source for the history of American merchandise, technology, marketing, consumption and design, and is used annually by scholars and researchers.
This catalog of Averill house paints from Seeley Brothers in 1886 is featured in the new exhibit “Color In a New Light,” now open in @smithsoniannmnh and online at library.si.edu/color.
