This material is the ‘glue’ that holds together an entire ecosystem; polar bears walk on its surface, walrus haul out on it and ivory gulls feed on it. I photographed this thin sliver of sea ice in a lab on a research ship in the high Arctic. The structure of crystals within the ice is brought out by a large polarising filter placed over the top. Each winter the Arctic sea ice should grow seasonally, this January the records were the lowest extent for the month since satellite records began. The survival of this ecosystem depends on the temperatures in the Arctic Ocean and the atmosphere above, right now these temperatures are rising considerably.
