Most natural history museums were created at a time when people thought they needed to subdue the Earth. Today, the Natural History Museum in Berlin understands its role as an educational one: their mission is to teach visitors about the imperative need to preserve our planet. The collections are so extensive that less than 1 in 5000 specimens is exhibited, and they attract researchers from around the world. The storage vaults behind the scenes of the museum, containing over 30 million specimens, are a testament to this earlier belief, including these shark skins dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.
This photo was shot #onassignment for a story on the museum in the December 2015 issue of the German edition of @ナショナルジオグラフィック. To see more photos from the museum and read the story (German-language), visit: www.nationalgeographic.de/reportagen/topthemen/2015/museums-magie-warten-auf-den-t-rex
