In 1997, the town of Akmola replaced Almaty as capital of Kazakhstan, and subsequently was renamed Astana (meaning "The Capital" in Kazakh) in 1998. A planned city, Astana has tripled in population and is now home to futuristic buildings and skyscrapers.
An engineer takes the express route to work high above the city to the construction site for the Astana Media Center, which is now one of the most distinct buildings of Central Asia.
