In 1885, when #FranciscoOller was back in Puerto Rico, his friend #PaulCezanne was experimenting with new representations of nature that looked toward abstraction. In The Village of Gardanne, Cézanne juxtaposed the blocky geometries of a southern French townscape with the curling organic forms of rolling hills and vegetation, shifting the planes of Gardanne’s angular roofs in anticipation of Cubist experiments in the early 20th century.
