This week we’re celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of James Smithson, the man who started it all.
Why not his birthday? The exact date of Smithson’s birth (along with many other details about his life, including why he left his estate to the U.S. to found a Smithsonian Institution) remains a mystery. For #Smithson250, here are five facts that we do know about him:
1️⃣Smithson never came to America…while he was alive. He was buried in Italy, but his body was exhumed and brought here later, and now resides in the crypt of our Castle building
2️⃣An Englishman who studied at Oxford, Smithson was a chemist and tinkerer who also came up with an improved method for making coffee
3️⃣We’re not the only thing named after him: The mineral smithsonite was named after Smithson, who first identified it in 1802
4️⃣His gift almost wasn’t—when the U.S. found out about Smithson’s will, congressional bickering almost kept us from existing
5️⃣Smithson’s gift arrived in the form of 11 boxes of gold coins. Now we’re 19 museums, nine research centers and a zoo!
