Happy #VeteransDay! Yesterday, our Armed Forces History staff members and interns gave our "Price of Freedom: Americans at War" exhibition a little extra polish. We routinely clean cases and carefully dust objects in the collection, but every year before important military holidays like Veterans Day and Memorial Day we make sure to give our military history section a little extra attention in honor of those who served.
Cleaning a Huey Helicopter from the Vietnam War is a big job! Carefully dusting objects is actually an important skill in the museum field and one that many staff members pitch in to do. Nearly 4,000 Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopters, nicknamed "Hueys," served during the Vietnam War. This Huey, with tail number 65-10091, was deployed to Vietnam in 1966 and served with the 173rd Assault Helicopter Company, known as the "Robin Hoods." You can see it on display on the museum's third floor.
Many thanks for our veterans and military families for all that you do. We hope to see you at the museum soon!
