For those who know the history of the Guggenheim, architect Frank Lloyd Wright is a familliar name. However, very few know about the two Williams who helped him build the museum. During the design and construction of the Guggenheim, William H. Short (selected by Wright to oversee the Guggenheim’s construction) and William Wesley Peters (Wright’s son-in-law, and one of the first Taliesin apprentices) played a significant role in the establishment of the building. It was their drive that pushed the project to completion while Wright attended to his other commissions and grappled with periods of ill health. In the words of William Short, it was the “cast of characters” that gave the building meaning: “Most important building projects are generated by powerful and talented individuals. I doubt that any other recent project depended so much on such a combination of people... if any one of them had not participated, the museum would not have been built.” Learn more about these men at blogs.guggenheim.org.
