NASA released the first image of Earth from its Deep Space Climate Observatory satellite on July 20, 2015. The image was taken from one million miles away – the Lagrange point 1 (the position where our Earth and the Sun exert the same amount of gravitational force on an object such as this satellite, which, as a result, requires minimal power to maintain its position). NASA says the photo was snapped with a Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC), a four megapixel CCD camera, and a telescope. Starting from September, the camera will take daily photos of Earth, which will be uploaded to a website every 12 to 36 hours. The satellite will also monitor solar activities, offering Earth an early warning system before a surge of particles and magnetic field reaches the planet. Photo by @NASA. Read more on time.com.
