This is an iron lung machine from 1931. They were used during the early stages of polio when the virus attacked the central nervous system, which in extreme cases led to the inability to control the muscles responsible for swallowing and breathing. Some people needed them temporarily. Others needed them for life. Learn more about what life was like with an iron lung on the blog: bit.ly/iron_lung (Clickable link in profile.) On July 15, join us for #DisabilityStories, an international conversation on disability history, art, and culture.
