150 years ago today: Four people are executed by hanging. Their crime: conspiring with John Wilkes Booth to assassinate President Lincoln. They also planned to assassinate Vice President Johnson and Secretary of State Seward.
These wrist irons confined the conspirators. Emotions were so strong that the defendants were bound—with the exception of Mary Surratt, the only woman—even during the trial. Surratt became the first woman executed by the United States.
Because the plot was considered an act of war, a military commission tried the accused.
