The work of Colombian artist #DorisSalcedo, now on view in a major retrospective at the Guggenheim, addresses the suffering inflicted on millions of people by systemic forms of inequity and violence. On blogs.guggenheim.org, the artist reflects on "Untitled" 2003 created on the occasion of the Istanbul Biennial, a massive installation made of more than 1,500 wooden chairs stacked between two buildings addressing the process of displacement. Salcedo recalls, “I was visiting the city, and... there were so many ruins in the central area that I started wondering, ‘It doesn’t make sense, that busy area has so many abandoned buildings.’ They were legacies of the violent past, where Jews and Greeks were forced out of their buildings.”
