Photo by Stephanie Sinclair @stephsinclairpix// @thephotosociety In the Kathmandu Valley young Newari girls called kumaris are worshipped as omnipotent deities. These prepubescent girls (in Nepali the word “kumari” means “virgin girl”) are glorified as living goddesses for years at time and are believed to have powers to see the future and the ability to cure the sick, fulfill specific wishes, and bestow blessings of protection and prosperity. But even a goddess, two-year-old Resuka, the Kumari of Kilagal, needs to rest. Here, Resuka takes a nap on her aunt's lap after school. For more information about Nepal's Living Goddesses, please see our story in the June edition of the magazine or online at http://bit.ly/1IqEtZg .
