Descending a previously unexplored river corridor means lots of surprises. In this case, that means dragging our boats for a week through waist high grass....in the heat of the day...going roughly 1.5 km per day (keep in mind we are trying to cover 1,600 km over the next nine weeks.) It takes ten people to pull one boat, giving three others the opportunity to rest. We have seven boats in total, which means it takes about three hours to move everything about 750 meters. We are burning roughly 5,000 calories per day and consuming 2,000 calories at most. Our diet consist solely of rice and beans...and coffee. Essentially, this is rough going. We run a heavy calorie deficit with our average heart rate for the day hovering around 130. That includes a 3 hour rest stop to escape the midday sun. We haven't even reached the Hippos, crocs, lions, and elephants yet. Often times I'm told I have the best job in the world.
