Ridgway's Rail, Arrowhead Marsh, Oakland, CA. Photo by @peteressick on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック. The Ridgway'a Rail, which used to be known as the Clapper Rail, is an endangered species that lives in salt marshes and rarely flies. Most of the remaining population is found in the San Francisco Bay Area. The loss of 90 percent of the salt marshes in this estuary explains why it is endangered. The best time to see the rail is at low tide early in the morning, when it briefly will come out from the cover of the marsh to feed. I photographed this rail at the Arrowhead Marsh which is right next to the Oakland Airport. The rail is an important symbol and monitor for the restoration of salt marshes in the San Francisco Estuary.
