A young fisherman's footprints are left on a long pole, used to connect giant fishing weirs over dangerously fast Mekong River rapids, as he carries the morning catch to the river bank. The traditional weir was erected in a stretch of Mekong River channel rapids between Nakasoum Island and Don Sahong Island in southern Laos

The Laos government has announced intentions to go ahead with the controversial Don Sahong Mekong River hydroelectric dam. Residents on the islands and environmental groups fear the construction of the dam may block fish migration, and threaten the ecology of the river and the well-being of those who live in the 4,000 islands area.

Please take a look at our new story about dam construction on the main stem of the Mekong River, "Harnessing the Mekong or Killing It?" in the May issue of National Geographic by photographer @dguttenfelder, writer @rhymeswithmyhouse and photo editor @roseleen.
