Photograph by @paulnicklen // Large and healthy bears like this huge male are better suited for long swims in the 28.5F water temperatures of the high arctic. One bear with a satellite-collar was tracked swimming over 500 continuous miles. Skinnier bears and cubs are more susceptible to hypothermia. There are areas near Svalbard, for example that have sea ice for up to 20 weeks less each year than in the 1990's. Ice is disappearing that fast. That is almost half of a year without any sea ice. Once ice disappears, bears are confined to land. They may find a snack of bird eggs or birds themselves but this is not enough nutrition to sustain them. They need ice in order to hunt seals. Please follow me on @paulnicklen as I continue to show the connection between humans, wildlife and sea ice. #climatechange #beauty #love #nature #wildlife #animals @natgeocreative @thephotosociety @instagramhub @picoftheday @photooftheday
