On this date in 1955, Elston Howard became the first black player in Yankees history. The St. Louis native would go on to win four World Series with the Yankees, as well as two Gold Glove Awards and the 1963 American League MVP Award. An All-Star in nine consecutive seasons (1957-65), Howard's dignified manner and competitive spirit made him a fan favorite in New York. The Yankees retired his No. 32 on July 21, 1984.
