#NatGeoTravelStories // Follow our account this weekend as @JimRichardsonNG shares 12 travel recommendations from his Islands of Obsession photo series taken in Scotland's Hebrides and Orkney Islands.

#1 Journey to Fingal’s Cave -
This astounding cave of cathedral-like basalt columns has been beckoning travelers to the Isle of Staffa since Victorian times, beguiling everyone with its hulking beauty and rhythmic songs of waves washing deep into the island’s heart. Geology is the prime actor here (think primordial lava pouring out onto the land and cooling in order to construct these stoney organ pipes) but the romantic heart soon takes over when you are standing in the cavern. Composer Felix Mendelssohn made this same pilgrimage in his youth (in 1827) and it inspired him to write his Hebrides Overture. Getting here will take you from Oban to the Isle of Mull, then perhaps over to Iona, and then by day boat out to Staffa. (I like the trip out with Davey Fitzpatrick on the Iolaire.) If its Puffin season you’ll hit the mother load of Scottish island trips.
