I was thrilled to see so many references to #chiaroscuro (a technical artistic term that denotes high contrast between shadow and light), #Caravaggio and classical painting techniques in response to the image I shared yesterday. In keeping with that aesthetic spirit, here's another chiaroscuro image of a woman preparing an evening meal by #solar light in the village of Kanan Kru in the West #African country of #IvoryCoast. With many rural communities still without reliable access to #electricity, solar lights have emerged as a cost effective solution. Private sector companies have popped up in countries across the continent to provide low-cost portable lights and home panels. For example, in #Kenya, solar start-ups offer packages that include several multi-brightness LED lights, a flashlight, phone charging docks and a small solar panel. Customers put forth approximately USD 35 as a down payment and pay off the rest of the cost in small payments through mobile phone money transfers. While ultimately governments must enhance access to electricity, these types of solar solutions have filled an important gap. #Africa #power #electricity #startups #energy #lights
