A sheep-only herd wouldn't move as efficiently. Moving means eating more grass, even if it's hard to find in winter… More grass means fatter animals... and up above 14.000 feet, in this barren land well above tree-line, Kyrgyz #nomads depends on their animals for survival. Preparing for my @NatGeoLive lecture on the Evolution of Diet on April 15th in Washington DC. This image is from my first winter expedition in the Afghan Pamir. I returned many times after that.
