Discover delightful depictions of Sufi dervishes in a new small display in Room 34.
This scene comes from the Indo-Persian Sufi poet Amir Khusraw Dihlavi’s Khamsa (Quintet), which contains a series of discourses about theology and ethics. The painting corresponds with an anecdote in which a courtier happens upon a hermit while hunting. When he asks the hermit how one can live in such a fashion, the hermit responds that he has sought refuge in the cave because of the trials of life. The courtier assures him that an appeal to the king could save him from such a miserable existence, but the hermit asks how a man who lives on roots could work in the service of a king.

Page from a manuscript of the Matlaʿ al-anvar (Rising place of lights) of Amir Khusraw Dihlavi (1253–1325). Iran, Qazvin, about 1560–70. Ink, opaque watercolour and gold on paper.
