This basket was made by Yuwali (Janice Nixon), a Martu woman from the Western Desert in Australia. In 2005 she told her story of first contact with white people in the book 'Cleared Out: First Contact in the Western Desert'. She was 17 years old when government patrol officers went into the desert to remove people due to testing of atomic weapons. Like other women from the desert region Yuwali uses her knowledge of country to make beautiful baskets for sale. You can see this object in our forthcoming exhibition #IndigenousAustralia
