At a few kilometers from Arles, half-wild Camargue horses seem to protect the Chapel Sainte-Croix (the Chapel of the Holy Cross) near the Montmajour Abbey. Or are they still waiting for their riders? A legend says that the chapel was built over the tombs of the French knights fighting the Moors invasion in the year 800 A.D...(more insight about this photo on my feed). Built in 1170 AD in the shape of a cross, Sainte-Croix is a jewel of Provencal Romanesque art. The Roman Catholic religion was and is still important in Provence. Hundreds of chapels and impressive abbeys have been built in the 11th and 12th century. This is what we call Romanesque architecture, etymologically speaking, which takes its inspiration from Ancient Rome and the Roman Empire (100 BC to 400 AD). #loveforancienthistory
