A Uyghur mother delighted me by showing off her beautiful baby as I wandered the streets of Khotan. We never published this image so I've never been able to share the moment until now. Khotan (or Hotan, there are several spellings) is on the oldest stretch of the Silk Road in Western China. Marco Polo said that the people he met here in the 13th century "live by trade and industry; they are not at all warlike."
