World Food Day — As our population grows, how will we feed ourselves in an affordable, environmentally balanced, healthy way?

A few years ago while working on the @ナショナルジオグラフィック story, End of Plenty, I visited China to understand the changing food habits within a population of 1.4 billion people who's economic power had dramatically increased in recent years — the rising demand for meat. I took this photograph at a market in Guangdong Province where years earlier when I had visited was mostly fish, vegetables, grains and yes, some meat. Having lived in China from 1996 through 2003, I witnessed the incredible economic changes taking place — people have the right to be successful, to have opportunities after decades of poverty. While I agree that eating less meat is good, the question I often ask myself is when our population reaches 9 billion by 2050, how will we feed ourselves in an balanced, environmentally sustainable, affordable way ~ John Stanmeyer
