K-pop stars raise P30M for ALS

Scores of celebrities and public figures in South Korea took on the popular ice bucket challenge to raise donations and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
So far, their effort has netted 700 million won (about P30 million or $686,000), which benefited the Seungil Hope Foundation, established by Sean Ro and Park Seung Il, a former basketball player and coach suffering from ALS.
Korean celebrities who accepted the ice bucket challenge include pop star Rain, 2NE1’s Dara, actor KIM SOO HYUN, Kim Woobin, Choi Ji Woo, members of Girls’ Generation, Super Junior, JYJ, SHINee, Infinite, Teen Top, EXO, CNBLUE, MBLAQ, 2PM, 2AM, miss A, SISTAR, 4Minute, Daniel Henney, Lee Jong Suk, Block B and Wonder Girls.
It was estimated that about 7,000 people participated in the ALS ice bucket challenge and donated to the foundation.
It is hoped that with continuing efforts, a hospital for ALS patients may be established in Korea in the near future.
According to the ALS Association, ALS “is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.”
ALS patients “lose the ability to initiate and control muscle movement, which often leads to total paralysis and death within two to five years of diagnosis.”
