Photo @pedromcbride (Pete McBride) Workers inside a leather tannery in Kanpur, India. Ever wonder where your leather for your shoes come from? Nearly 1/10th of the world’s #leather supply for shoes and belts comes from tanneries located on the banks of the #Ganges River in India. While the industry provides thousands of jobs, working conditions are #toxic and challenging. My eyes burned for three days after I made this photo. Regulations to recycle heavy metals like chromium from tannery waste water are now in place, but water tests still show high concentrations of #chromium reaching the water table and Ganges River.
