Today in 1907: Sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, creator of this $20 gold coin design, dies.
In 1905, President Teddy Roosevelt enlisted the famed sculptor to create a design that was reminiscent of the beauty and high relief of ancient Greek coins. What Saint-Gaudens came up with is truly remarkable. Lady Liberty is shown striding forward, holding a torch in one hand and an olive branch in another.
