Weeks after July 4, 1776, all Americans still hadn't heard the news of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
The decisive document was read aloud to George Washington (this is his uniform) and his troops in New York City on July 9. It wasn't until August 5 that the continental army in South Carolina finally heard the news.
