Locals say the stone streets of Santiago de Compostela are at their most beautiful in the rain, although it's hard to catch the city in a bad pose. This rediscovered tourist and pilgrimage destination also serves as capital of the autonomous region of Galicia in northwestern Spain. The city's magnificent cathedral is thought to be built around the tomb of Santiago Apóstol [St James the Apostle], and an average of 150,000 pilgrims and countless thousands of other visitors make the journey here each year.
