Photo by @Thomas Peschak For thousands of years sawfish have been culturally important to many societies around the world. Considered symbols of strength, and spirituality, they are widely revered. Certain clans of Aborigines believed them to be supernatural beings who used their rostra to carve rivers and create landscapes. In the Arab world, rostra used to be placed on roofs to wards off evil spirits. Far more prosaically, rostra are used as bar decorations in the Florida keys. The scientists that have been so critical in helping me take
photographs of these elusive fish for the past 3 years have just
published the seminal report (the global sawfish conservation
strategy) on these enigmatic and critically endangered fish. #IUCN
