Photo by @chamiltonjames (Charlie Hamilton James). A young condor strapped by its feet to a bull, struggles for balance during a bull fight in Cotabambas, Peru. The origins of this 'Blood Festival' known as the 'Yawar Fiesta' are not clear but it is generally considered that the Condor represents the Incas and their fight over the Spanish Conquistadors (the larger bull). The condors involved in the 'Yawar Fiesta' are wild caught and released after a short bull fight. However mortality is not known and some scientists suggest that it could be higher than 50%. The Yawar Fiesta, which is held in around 55 villages across the Peruvian Andes, sometimes twice a year; is undoubtedly having an impact on their declining population. They are now considered 'Near Threatened' by the IUCN. Old world vultures are currently experiencing some of the fastest declines of any family of species in history. We are covering the vulture decline for a 2015 issue of the magazine and I shall post images as I travel across the world covering the story over the next year. This image is cropped - I have put a similar uncropped version with the Matador on my personal IG feed - @chamiltonjames
