With the ongoing drought, water levels have gotten so low in Lake Mead that one of the two working intake pipes drawing water for Las Vegas was in danger of being above the lake. At a cost of $860 million, the water authority is building a third intake pipe 20 feet in diameter to insure water is available when the lake is low. The cost is being paid by residents of Las Vegas in the form of higher water bills.
