Vice President Andrew Johnson was asleep at the Kirkwood hotel in Washington, D.C., on the evening of the assassination of President Lincoln.
He woke to a loud pounding on his door. Former Wisconsin Governor Leonard Farwell, who had just come from Ford's Theater, told Johnson the news.
Johnson wanted to rush to Lincoln's side but was told to stay put until order returned to the streets. He arrived at Lincoln's bedside at dawn. After paying his respects to Mary Todd Lincoln and Robert Lincoln, he returned to the Kirkwood.
On today's date in 1865, he took the oath of office in the hotel lobby. He had served as vice president for six weeks after a career in Tennessee politics.
This flag is from the Lincoln-Johnson campaign.
