Photo by @peteressick. Shinto, which roughly means "the study of spirits," is the indigenous religion of Japan. The spirits can be rocks, trees, rivers, or people who are connected to nature. Garden civilization is another expression of the traditional Japanese view of nature. This photo is of Kenroku-en, one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan. Kenroku-en translates to "garden that combines six characteristics."According to the ancient Chinese book of gardens, there are six features that every garden should have. The features are grouped into three pairs: spaciousness and seclusion, artifice and antiquity, and watercourses and panoramas. The concept of artifice and antiquity is particularly revealing of the Japanese relationship to nature. It is explained on the official Kenroku-en web site as: "The very idea of a formally sculpted garden is such that its form should seemingly break the ancient patterns of nature as a matter of course. Kenroku-en is nothing if not artificial in the extreme, and yet, somehow, all the artificial effigies, the carefully planned weathered rocks and artfully trained aged trees have grown together naturally." - excerpt from "Our Beautiful, Fragile World."
