Photo by Fritz Hoffmann @FritzPhotos - Defueled reactor compartments removed from decommissioned US Navy nuclear-powered submarines and cruisers are stored in the low-level burial ground called Trench 94 located at a nuclear waste disposal landfill site at Hanford, Washington. The diameter of each of these steel hull sections is huge, each one equals that of the submarine it was removed from. The rest of the ship was recycled but this section housed the nuclear fuel that powered it. The lead shield in these compartments was contaminated during the years in use. The first compartment to be stored here came from the USS Patrick Henry in 1986.

Getting there is often the hardest part of making a picture and getting permissions to be on site often consumes a big chunk of the time spent when working on a National Geographic story. Thanks to Cameron and Geoff at the DOE for help with that. Once on location other logistical problems need to be solved. For this picture I was in a boom lift extended 80 feet above the ground. That was made possible with the assistance of boom operators Phil and Vince and safety supervisor Russ, all made possible by safety director Wayne. Thanks guys! For this National Geographic story I'm using boom lifts to photograph sites like this around the country. The story is scheduled to be published in late 2014.
