Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres was born on this date in 1780. In 1824 he was asked to paint an altarpiece honoring Saint Symphorien for the Cathedral of Autun, France. Thirty years after the unveiling of his altarpiece, Ingres returned to the subject in this reduced-scale oil painting.
