Today marks the 27th anniversary of the world’s worst nuclear catastrophe. On April 26th in 1986, at 1:23 a.m., operators committed a fatal series of errors in the control room of Reactor #4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. It triggered an explosion and a fire that burned for 10 days. The radioactive fallout drove more than 250,000 people permanently from their homes and thousands have died as a result of the accident. The story that National Geographic ran at the 20th anniversary is as relevant as it was at the time of its publication. @thephotosociety #natgeo #chernobyl #nuclearaccident
