Photo by @chamiltonjames A close encounter with a eurasian river otter in the sea off Shetland. Although shy and nocturnal in much of England, otters in Scotland live on the coast and venture out during the day to hunt small fish and crabs. Shetland, which lies around a 100 miles north east of Scotland is a stronghold for otters; it is thought that they were introduced to the islands from Norway many centuries ago by Vikings. I took this shot whilst trying to photograph wild otters in the sea off northern Shetland. The otter was a young male and his fish an eelpout. I was hoping he might stick his head underwater as he neared me 200m from the shore, but he was too busy eating to notice me until he bumped into my mask! River otter will appear in February issue of National Geographic Magazine.
