Nitrogen levels on many of the lakes and springs in Florida have risen dramatically in the last 50 years as a result of development. On this lake south of Orlando the excess nitrogen feeds an invasive water lettuce that clogs up the waterways for boat traffic. The South Florida Water Management has to come by each year and spray herbicides to kill the lettuce so that homeowners can use their boat docks. It is easy for us Americans to point a finger at pollution in other poor or developing countries, but we have our own pollution problems, too. We need to clean up our waterways if we want to be a positive example to the rest of the world.
